Esa-Pekka Salonen

Esa-Pekka Salonen is a Finnish conductor and composer who led the Los Angeles Philharmonic for 17 years and helped build its reputation as one of the most adventurous orchestras in the United States. As a composer, he writes music of restless energy and brilliant color, drawing on his experience of the orchestra from the podium. He continues to conduct internationally and to compose new works for major orchestras, moving easily between the two roles most musicians keep separate.

Salonen's music tends to move in dense, fast-shifting layers, with rhythms that overlap and pull against each other rather than lining up neatly. Orchestration is vivid and detailed, often featuring prominent brass and percussion writing that reflects his own background as a horn player. Pieces frequently open abruptly, with little slow introduction, and build through accumulating waves of sound rather than simple melodic themes. Quieter passages can turn suddenly luminous, with strings and winds spun into fine, shimmering textures. Many works run twenty to thirty minutes and unfold in a single continuous span rather than clearly separated movements. Endings are often high-energy and abrupt rather than gradually wound down, leaving a sense of music cut off mid-motion. Listeners coming from film or electronic music sometimes find the sound world approachable despite its complexity.

Esa-Pekka Salonen was born in Helsinki, Finland, in 1958. He studied composition and horn at the Sibelius Academy, and his early ambitions were split between playing, composing, and conducting before conducting came to dominate his career.

He rose to international attention in the 1980s after stepping in on short notice to conduct the Philharmonia Orchestra in London, an event that led to a long association with British orchestras. In 1992 he became music director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, a post he held until 2009, a period in which the orchestra moved into its new Walt Disney Concert Hall and built a strong identity around new and recent music alongside the standard repertoire.

After leaving Los Angeles, Salonen continued to hold major conducting posts in Europe, including with Swedish and British orchestras, while returning regularly to the United States as a guest conductor. He resumed a formal relationship with the Los Angeles Philharmonic in later years. Throughout this period he kept composing, producing orchestral, concerto, and vocal works performed by major orchestras worldwide. He remains active as both conductor and composer.
