Fred Devyatkin

Conductor, Violin

Music director leading the Beaufort Symphony Orchestra from the podium and, some nights, the violin section.

In short

Fred Devyatkin appears with the Beaufort Symphony Orchestra in South Carolina, both as conductor and as a violin soloist. In October 2026 he conducts a program of German orchestral works, and in December 2026 he steps out as violin soloist in a Bach double concerto alongside a holiday favorite by Tchaikovsky.

What to listen for

In the October concert, listeners can expect a Telemann concerto for two violas, an unusual pairing that lets two lower-voiced string instruments trade melodic lines, followed by Beethoven's First Symphony, a compact classical-style work that still hints at the composer's later boldness, and Mendelssohn's "Scottish" Symphony, whose brooding opening and dance-like final pages evoke a windswept landscape. In December, the Bach Double Concerto pairs violin with oboe in a close, conversational duet built on interlocking melodic lines, a chance to hear Devyatkin as a soloist rather than from the podium, before the orchestra turns to selections from Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker, full of the familiar sparkle of its dances.
