Jaap van Zweden was born in 1960 in Amsterdam. He trained as a violinist and, remarkably, became concertmaster of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra at just 19 years old, one of the youngest to hold that position. He later shifted his focus to conducting, studying at the Juilliard School, and built a career leading orchestras in the Netherlands and abroad. He served as music director of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra for a decade, raising its international profile, and subsequently became music director of the New York Philharmonic, a post he held through the mid-2020s. He has also held posts with the Hong Kong Philharmonic. Throughout his career he has been associated with large-scale symphonic repertoire, particularly Beethoven, Bruckner, and Mahler, and he regularly appears as a guest conductor with leading orchestras across the United States and Europe.
