This season she brings a mix of Romantic warhorses (Grieg, Beethoven's "Emperor") and contemporary American works (Jonathan Leshnoff, Joan Tower), performing with orchestras from California to Florida to Alabama. Listeners can expect a soloist equally comfortable with large-scale virtuoso display and newer scores written specifically to sit alongside orchestral standards.

What to listen for

Yang's programs this season pair familiar concerto repertoire with pieces built to converse with it. In Grieg's Piano Concerto in A minor, listen for the opening's dramatic downward cascade from the piano and the folk-inflected melodies that follow, songful rather than purely showy. Beethoven's "Emperor" Concerto gives her a chance to move from hushed, spacious slow-movement lines into the brisk, dance-like finale. The Joan Tower concerto and Leshnoff's "Rhapsody on America" are newer American works, harder to predict in advance, but placed alongside Tchaikovsky and Copland they suggest a soloist willing to sit inside a program built around American identity and orchestral color rather than just deliver a single flashy centerpiece.
