Lara Downes

Lara Downes is an American pianist known for recital and recording projects that pull American music into view, especially works by Black composers whose scores sat unplayed for decades. Her albums mix classical repertoire with spirituals, jazz-touched miniatures, and new commissions, and she often introduces the music from the stage. She also hosts and produces classical programming for public radio and media. She appears with the New Century Chamber Orchestra in San Francisco in January 2027 on a program titled BLOOM.

Downes tends to program in short pieces rather than large sonatas, threading a set of miniatures into a story so that one number leads to the next without a break in mood. Her playing favors a singing line and a soft, unhurried touch, closer to song accompaniment than to virtuoso display, and she lets silences sit at the ends of phrases. Expect names a newcomer may not know beside familiar ones: Florence Price, Margaret Bonds, Duke Ellington, Scott Joplin, spirituals in concert arrangements, along with living American composers who write for her. She usually speaks between pieces, explaining where a score was found and who wrote it, which makes her concerts easy to follow with no background at all.
