Olga Kern

Olga Kern is a Russian-American pianist known for large-scale Romantic repertoire, especially Rachmaninoff. She rose to international attention after winning the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 2001, one of the first women to do so in decades, and has since built a career performing with major orchestras across the US and abroad.

Kern brings a big, full-bodied sound to Romantic concertos, favoring rich tone and sweeping climaxes over understatement. In Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 3, the piece she'll perform here, expect a soloist unafraid of the work's density and its long, winding first-movement cadenza, a passage where the piano essentially takes over the orchestra's material and reshapes it alone.
