A calmer central stretch brings a broad, romantic melody, often carried by violins, standing in for the film's love story and giving the ear a place to rest between the action music.

Listen for the orchestra painting the sea itself: rolling string figures and shifting harmonies suggest waves and wind, sometimes with harp or woodwinds glinting on top like light on water. Percussion and low brass mark moments of danger or combat, then the opening fanfare and main theme return to close the suite, now fuller and more triumphant, the way a film score wraps up its hero's final victory.

Because this is a suite assembled from cues written to fit specific scenes, transitions can be sudden, one mood giving way to another almost like a scene change, rather than developing gradually as in a symphony.

Korngold wrote the score for "The Sea Hawk," a 1940 Warner Bros. swashbuckler starring Errol Flynn as a privateer battling the Spanish Armada, at the height of his Hollywood career. Vienna-trained and already an established opera composer, Korngold had moved to Los Angeles in the 1930s and become one of the studio system's most sought-after composers, treating film scoring with the same symphonic ambition as concert music. His music for "The Sea Hawk" earned an Academy Award nomination and is remembered as one of the defining scores of Hollywood's golden age of swashbucklers. Concert suites arranged from the score, combining its fanfares, love theme, and storm music, entered the orchestral repertoire decades later as conductors and audiences rediscovered Korngold's film music as concert-worthy in its own right, and it is now a staple of pops and family programs.
