Silvestre Revueltas composed the score for Redes (released in English as The Wave) in 1935, for a film about impoverished fishermen in the Gulf Coast village of Alvarado who organize against the merchants who control their livelihoods. The film was a landmark of Mexican social cinema, produced with government support and shaped by several collaborators including Paul Strand and Emilio Gomez Muriel. Revueltas, already known for blending Mexican folk idiom with modernist technique, wrote music that matched the film's stark, documentary-like images. After the film's release, conductors began extracting a concert suite from the score, allowing the music to circulate independently in the concert hall. It has since become one of Revueltas's most performed orchestral works, valued both as a strong example of his personal style and as a rare instance of a film score achieving a lasting life on the concert stage.
