Star Wars Suite

The suite opens with the "Main Title," the fanfare that has introduced every Star Wars film since 1977: brass blaring the theme upward while the rest of the orchestra rushes underneath it. From there, programs typically move through a sequence of the score's most familiar landmarks rather than following any single film's story in order.

Listen for "Princess Leia's Theme," a slower, songlike melody carried by strings and woodwinds, offering a gentler contrast after the opening fanfare. Many performances include "The Imperial March," instantly recognizable from its heavy, marching brass and minor-key menace, written for Darth Vader. A cantina or alien-band sequence sometimes appears, built on quirky woodwind runs meant to sound off-kilter and playful. Suites often close with "The Throne Room" or a return of the main fanfare, bringing the set back to the same triumphant brass that opened it.

Because this is a concert suite rather than a fixed, published score, the exact order and selection of movements can vary from orchestra to orchestra and season to season. What stays constant is the sense of a musical scrapbook: a handful of themes, each tied to a character or moment, strung together for the concert hall.

John Williams composed the music for the original Star Wars film, released in 1977, at the request of director George Lucas, who wanted a full symphonic score in the tradition of old Hollywood adventure films rather than a contemporary pop soundtrack. The music was performed and recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra and quickly became one of the most widely recognized film scores ever written. As the franchise grew across further films, Williams continued to score them, and orchestras began assembling selections from these scores into concert suites for symphony programs. These suites are not a single fixed work but a flexible arrangement of favorite themes, repackaged in different combinations for pops concerts, family programs, and film-with-orchestra events.
