Herbert Blomstedt

Herbert Blomstedt is a Swedish-American conductor, born in 1927, celebrated for decades of work with the world's leading orchestras. He has held chief posts in Scandinavia, Germany, and the United States, and is especially admired for his readings of Beethoven, Schubert, Bruckner, Nielsen, and Sibelius. Now well past his 95th birthday, he continues to conduct without a baton, a hallmark of his podium style.

Blomstedt conducts standing very still, guiding orchestras with his hands and eyes rather than a baton, and he leads most performances entirely from memory, without a score in front of him. Herbert Blomstedt was born in 1927 in Springfield, Massachusetts, to Swedish parents, and grew up in Sweden. He studied conducting and composition in Stockholm and Uppsala, and later studied further in the United States and Europe, including with Igor Markevitch and at Tanglewood. He built his early career leading Scandinavian orchestras, including the Norrköping Symphony, the Oslo Philharmonic, and the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra, and served as music director of the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra. He later held chief conductor posts with the Staatskapelle Dresden in East Germany, the San Francisco Symphony, the NDR Symphony Orchestra in Hamburg, and the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra. Since stepping back from full-time titled posts, he has continued to appear as a guest conductor with major orchestras worldwide well into his tenth decade, maintaining an active performing career into his late nineties.
