Barber's Knoxville: Summer of 1915 sets a hazy, conversational prose text by James Agee describing a summer evening on a porch; the vocal line moves in long, unhurried phrases over a warm orchestral backdrop, asking for a singer who can sustain a soft, intimate tone without being covered by the orchestra. Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 asks for the opposite: in the final movement, the soprano joins three other soloists and a full chorus in music that rises to a bright, sustained high register above a large orchestral and choral mass, projecting clearly through dense, celebratory textures. The program also includes a new work by Jon Cziner, Rear-View, offering a contemporary counterpoint to the two well-known repertoire staples.
